Why do teenagers spend so much time on social networks?

Whether it's chatting with friends, having fun, following inspiring personalities or keeping up to date, social networks offer a wide range of functions, which explains why young people devote so much time to them.

And for a majority, social networks have become a hobby like any other: 61% of young people use them for no particular purpose, just to relieve boredom.

But what is it that holds them back so much?
In reality, platforms like Instagram and TikTok, popular with teenagers and young adults, are captivating thanks to particularly sophisticated algorithms. They analyze user behavior in real time: the videos they watch, the publications they like or the accounts they follow.

By cross-referencing this data, the algorithm builds an infinite news feed, personalized and optimized to maintain our attention. By playing on psychological mechanisms such as curiosity or fear of missing out (FOMO), these algorithms push us to scroll through content, creating an immersive experience that's very hard to interrupt.

The result: almost 45% of 16-25 year-olds spend between 3 and 5 hours a day "scrolling".
