What are the recommended screen times for children?
Screen time recommendations for children vary according to their age and developmental needs.
The recommendations of French and European bodies (ARCOM, PNNS and WHO) are similar to each other, and are expressed in terms of hours per day. In fact, they are quite far removed from the realities of use.
Psychiatrist Serge Tisseron proposes his own system of recommendations, the 3-6-9-12 rule, which is closer to practice and allows self-regulation by parents:
- For children under 3, avoid screens. Give priority to early-learning activities and mobility games.
- Between ages 3 and 6, limit screen time to less than 30 minutes a day.
- Between ages 6 and 9, no more than 1 hour a day. Screen time should be defined with the child. Age-appropriate video games can be introduced.
- Between the ages of 9 and 12, the use of screens must be reasoned and defined with the child. In particular, the age for using a cell phone and the rules for using the Internet.
At all ages, it's important to promote balanced, supervised screen use, encouraging regular breaks to protect children's physical and mental health.
