How can I reduce my child's screen time without conflict?

Screens are not inherently bad, but it's the way we use them that can be. It's important to teach children how to use them properly.

In the event of excessive use, there are a few simple tricks that parents can put in place to manage the situation without conflict:

  • Set the rules with them: children are often more inclined to respect rules in which they have participated.
  • Keep screens in a common room, such as the living room, and not in the child's bedroom, to avoid abuse.
  • Create screen-free moments in the family, for example during mealtimes or before bedtime, when the whole family participates, to spend quality time together.
  • If you don't have much time to devote to him, take a few minutes to encourage him to play alone. For example, take 10 minutes with him at the start of a game to answer any questions he might have. Reassure him that you'll be spending time with him later.
