Does your child have trouble falling asleep, or wake up several times a night? He's probably suffering from sleep disorders. This may be due to inappropriate exposure to screens in the evening.

There are several reasons for this phenomenon:

  • the "blue light" emitted by screens disrupts the production of melatonin, the hormone that helps muscles relax and fall asleep.

  • screen-based content, especially video games and social networking sites, keeps our brains in a state of intellectual excitement, making it difficult to fall asleep.

In recent years, screen time in the evening and at night has increased considerably among children and teenagers. A survey of middle-school students in France revealed that after dinner, 52.6% spend more than an hour behind a screen. New behaviors have also emerged, such as connecting to a social network (11%) or texting in the middle of the night (15%).

To avoid disrupting his sleep, avoid bringing screens into your child's room as much as possible, and try to stick to a set bedtime. If your child's sleep problems persist, consult your doctor.
