Excessive screen time can present a number of risks for your child's physical and mental development and well-being.

A review of the literature has shown that excessive screen time impairs executive functions (e.g., staying focused on homework), sensory development (e.g., recognizing sounds or colors) and motor development (e.g., learning to write or run) from early childhood onwards. Screen time also affects language development by reducing the quantity and quality of interactions with parents and peers.

Early exposure to screens is linked to lower cognitive and academic performance a few years later. What's more, when your child or teenager is behind the screen, he or she isn't moving.

The lack of physical activity linked to screen use can have an impact on the risk of obesity, cardiovascular disease and the musculoskeletal system. Beyond these mental and physical consequences, some studies even show the impact of excessive use on the quality of nutrition and on the parent-child relationship. So it's important to keep an eye on how much time your child spends behind the screen.
