How can I reduce stress by working on my breathing?

Under stress, breathing becomes shallower and shorter. Conversely, it is possible to reduce stress by working on breathing. This is at the heart of a number of practices renowned for their anti-stress effects: meditation, yoga, sophrology... Lengthening your breathing by practicing ventral breathing can reduce stress in its acute phase, and even prevent it if practiced regularly.
