Are GMOs bad for our health?

To date, the consumption of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) has shown no proven harmful effects on health. This is largely due to the fact that the GMOs available on the market undergo rigorous risk assessments to ensure that they are safe for people and the environment. On the other hand, it is important to note that any genetic modification can potentially present risks due to the random nature of such manipulations, which can lead to unforeseen complications. In addition, the characteristics introduced and their interaction with the environment may also present risks. More specifically, it is possible that certain inserted genes have never previously been present in an organism or product. As studies and their results are not yet clear on the effects of GMOs on the environment and health, a debate persists today between NGOs and learned societies. Indeed, before new products go on sale, health assessments are carried out to anticipate any health risks, in line with the precautionary principle. In the case of GMOs, France applies the precautionary principle to protect the environment and health against risks that are still poorly understood. Consequently, it is essential to prove the absence of potential risks rather than their presence.
