Why is eating late at night fattening?

General

The results of a review published in 2022 suggest that eating later in the day and at night has a negative impact on weight regulation, increasing the risk of weight gain and obesity over time. Eating late at night also impacts other functions, such as the disruption of the circadian rhythm. This sleep-wake cycle influences our metabolism: eating late can lead to dysregulation of our metabolism and daily fluctuations in our hormones, which can, for example, alter our appetite, leading to weight gain.
Controlling meal timing looks promising to help regulate weight in people who are already obese, but more research is needed on its use as a preventive strategy.
