Can a sedentary lifestyle, despite a healthy diet, cause me to gain weight?

General

Weight gain is generally associated with a difference between the energy provided by food and the energy expended by the body. The main source of energy expenditure is the functioning of the body at rest (70% of daily energy expenditure). Digestion of the food we eat accounts for around 10%, and the remaining 20% depends on the day's physical activity. However, physical activity also helps build muscles, one of the most energy-consuming organs, even at rest. As a result, physical activity increases energy expenditure, even at rest, thus limiting weight gain.
