If one member of a couple is infected with genital herpes, is it possible to protect the other?

Herpes

To reduce the risk of transmission of genital herpes between members of a couple, it is advisable not to have sexual relations during "outbreak" periods. The small sores formed contain a virus-rich liquid that is contagious. The use of condoms helps protect against genital herpes. However, over the course of a long relationship, it can be very difficult to avoid infecting your partner.
