Does quitting smoking make you fat?
Most people (2/3) who stop smoking will gain weight in the year following cessation, while a third will not. On average, weight gain is estimated at around 4 kg. What explains this tendency to gain weight? When you stop smoking, you are more exposed to nicotine, which reduces appetite and increases energy expenditure. When you stop, you may also have a tendency to compensate for the lack by snacking, or to manage your anxiety by eating. However, effective substitutions such as properly dosed patches and a few simple dietary guidelines will help you prevent weight gain. Talk to your doctor about it.
