After 3 years of quitting smoking, I still have the same urge to smoke as when I started - is this normal?

Complexity

There are several types of tobacco dependence: a physical dependence linked to nicotine, and two other dimensions: psychological dependence (seeking comfort in tobacco) and behavioral dependence (habit of smoking in certain contexts). Physical nicotine dependence and its symptoms generally disappear within a few weeks. Psychic and behavioral dependence, on the other hand, take longer to disappear. If you still feel a strong urge to smoke several years after quitting, it's probably a psychic addiction that's still at work. This could be linked to an underlying problem such as chronic anxiety, or even depression, which needs to be treated. Don't hesitate to talk to your health care professional.
