Cognitive-behavioural therapy is based on the premise that dysfunctional thoughts dysfunctional thoughts about oneself, others or the world that lead to pathological gaming as an escape mechanism. The therapy is based on challenging these thoughts and developing more satisfying behaviours than gambling addiction. A number of studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of this type of therapy in video game use disorder. An experiment involving men considered "addicts" in Germany and Austria showed that, at the end of this treatment, almost 70% of beneficiaries were "in remission", compared with 24% in the control group who had not received CBT.
