General

Numerous studies have examined the impact of napping on health.
A literature review conducted in 2022 shows a positive effect of napping on cognitive performance. Intervention studies indicate that a single afternoon nap session per day may improve psychomotor function and memory. Naps also have beneficial effects on sports performance. However, naps should not be too long, as this can have deleterious effects on health. Naps of short or moderate duration have benefits for cognitive functions and sports performance, compared with no nap and long naps. Beyond one hour, there is a significant increase in the occurrence of obesity.
Nevertheless, the benefits of napping can only be observed if nocturnal sleep duration is adequate; it cannot compensate for chronic sleep deprivation.
