Is melatonin an effective remedy for insomnia/sleep disorders?
Melatonin, often referred to as the sleep hormone, is a small molecule synthesized by our brain, whose soporific action helps us fall asleep. Melatonin production increases at the end of the day, as light fades, reaching its peak concentration around 3 a.m., before falling back to a minimum at the time of waking.
Synthetic melatonin is often used as a remedy for insomnia, but its efficacy can vary according to the individual and the causes of insomnia. It is commonly used to treat circadian disorders, such as jet lag, night-shift disorders or insomnia linked to a shift in their internal biological clock. It has been shown to be effective in the short term in terms of time to sleep and sleep quality, but there is less evidence for its long-term efficacy. It seems less effective in some people, whose insomnia is caused by stress, anxiety, depression or medical problems.
We recommend that you consult a healthcare professional before starting any treatment for insomnia to determine the underlying cause and choose the most appropriate treatment.
