How are starchy foods, vegetables and meats distributed?
To ensure a balanced diet, the French National Nutrition and Health Plan recommends that adults eat :
- at least one wholemeal starch meal a day
- at least 5 fruits and vegetables a day (e.g. 3 portions of vegetables and 2 fruits)
- pulses at least twice a week
- two dairy products a day
- fish twice a week, including oily fish
- poultry is preferred, and meat (pork, beef, veal, mutton, lamb and offal) is limited to 500 g a week (i.e. around 3 to 4 steaks).
You don't have to eat poultry, meat, fish or eggs every day; you can alternate with foods that provide more plant proteins, such as pulses or cereal products (whole or semi-complete at best).
Meat, fish or eggs should be considered as a component of the main course, not as the dominant element. They should therefore be eaten in smaller quantities than the side dishes (vegetables and/or starches).
