What hindsight do we have on the vapoteuse?
Today, the electronic cigarette is widely used by the French as a smoking cessation tool. According to Santé Publique France, four out of five e-cigarette smokers have reduced their cigarette consumption. However, its long-term effectiveness remains uncertain, and its impact on health remains to be investigated.
Indeed, studies on the toxicity of vapoteuses are limited. Since 2018, research has identified the presence of heavy metals such as lead and chromium in e-cigarette refill liquids, while the presence of formaldehyde and other compounds could increase the risk of respiratory cancers after prolonged exposure. Although this risk is lower than that of traditional cigarettes, it remains present and should not be overlooked.
Health authorities, including the French High Council for Public Health, are calling for vigilance.
