Is it easier to quit smoking in a group?
Group sessions are sometimes offered as part of smoking cessation programs. They have been shown to be a useful aid to quitting smoking. They double the chances of success, compared with being given information leaflets alone. A study in the New England Journal of Medicine demonstrated the effectiveness of group cessation to such an extent that the smoking rate of 12,000 individuals observed fell from 66% in 1971 to 22% in 2003. However, it is not known whether group participation is more effective than individual coaching. In any case, both approaches have proved their worth.
