Do I have less chance of catching the coronavirus if I'm a smoker?
A study in the British Medical Journal published in January 2021 showed that the proportion of smokers among people with Covid-19 was 3% lower than the proportion of smokers in the English population. In addition, an AP-HP study showed that nicotine had a preventive effect on a smoker's ability to contract the coronavirus, compared with a non-smoker. However, all these studies also showed a significant increase in the frequency of more severe symptoms in smokers with Covid-19. The WHO points out that smoking also increases the risk of transmission of the virus from the hand to the mucous membranes of the mouth, thereby increasing the risk of contracting Covid-19.
