Why do we become sex addicts?

Categories FAQ
Sex addiction
General

As with other addictions, there is no single cause of sexual addiction. Initially, the behavior is used to regulate emotions, then as time goes by, the person uses it to relieve symptoms of withdrawal.

Various studies have identified certain vulnerability factors for sexual dependence:
- Biological factors, and in particular it seems that the same neurobiological mechanisms as those involved in drug dependence are at play. It should be noted that certain dopaminergic treatments, such as those prescribed for Parkinson's disease, can induce compulsive sexual behavior.

Psychological factors such as :

  • Dysfunctional attachment during childhood. In fact, negative attachment experiences in young children can have a negative impact on the emotional, cognitive and behavioral development of individuals and foster the development and maintenance of sexual dependence.
  • History of childhood sexual abuse
  • Low self-esteem
  • An anxiety disorder, a depressive disorder
