Is nymphomania a sex addiction?
Nymphomania is an old term found in the ICD (International Classification of Diseases), but is little used due to its pejorative connotation. Indeed, the concept of nymphomania has evolved considerably over time: in the 19th century, it was considered a serious mental illness, associated with hysteria.
In the 20th century, the term referred to hypersexuality in women. But simple hypersexuality (in the sense of an increase in the frequency of a normal behavior with no negative repercussions) is not enough to make the diagnosis of sexual addiction.
