Supporting smart neighbors' door-to-door campaign

Peer-to-peer health prevention: a proven method

Smart Neighbor @l.Mathie

Thanks to support from Ramsay Sante Foundation, theVoisinMalin association is continuing its addiction prevention program in local neighborhoods.

After Evry-Courcouronnes, two new door-to-door campaigns took place in the towns of Vénissieux on the Minguettes plateau, in the Lyon suburbs, and the Lille Sud district.

The aim of this program is to raise awareness among parents of young people in these working-class neighborhoods of the dangers of addictive practices, whether drug use or overexposure to screens.

By going door-to-door, the Smart Neighbors' status as residents, rather than as health professionals, encouraged afree, peer-to-peer exchange, avoiding a "medical" approach to the subject. They succeeded in creating a dialogue on the subject with local residents. Going directly to residents' homes is another channel for sharing information and creating discussion in the heart of the home.

In Vénissieux

Les Voisins Malins knocked on the doors of 550 families.

They spoke to 304 of these families.

97% of the residents we met found the passageway useful.

35% of the residents interviewed plan to take action following this visit:

  • 60% "talk to friends and family".
  • 20% "limiting screens for children
  • 16% "make an appointment with the Point Accueil Ecoute Famille" (family listening point)
In Lille

Les Voisins Malins knocked on the doors of 219 families in the "Lille sud" district.

They spoke to 83 of these families.

92% of residents found the Smart Neighbors program useful.

28% of the residents interviewed plan to take action following this visit:

  • 54%"act on your addiction" (to tobacco, social networks, smartphones, coffee...) ;
  • 40%"sharing information";
  • 15%"learn more about psycho-social skills".

Encouraging testimonials

Awareness of the harmful effects of nitrous oxide, time spent on screens, discovering the various local structures... these exchanges are indicative of the quality and importance of this approach, from neighbor to neighbor.

" I've lived here 29 years and never heard of these structures " - a resident

" A lady with her whole family let us into her house. She didn't know nitrous oxide, but her daughter next door said she did. The mother was surprised and realized she was 'the only one here who didn't know'. She wanted to know more about it " - a Smart Neighbor

" I saw a lady who was completely helpless with her 9-year-old daughter addicted to the tablet. I told her about PAEF. A week later I ran into her again and she had made an appointment " - a Voisine Maline

" I met an elderly couple who were worried about their sons drinking. They were happy to know that there are structures in place, and they're going to try to talk to him about it " - a Voisine Maline

" One lady asked me to leave her 3 flyers for her teenagers, and a fourth to give to her friend whose 3-year-old daughter is already addicted to screens! " - a Smart Neighbor

" I find the subject relevant, given the scale of the networks and also the proliferation of new substances " - a resident

" You've taught me something I didn't know about the misuse of nitrous oxide " - a resident

" On the subject of screens, I didn't know that there were different uses depending on the age of the child " - a resident

" It's great to come straight to our meeting, I would never have had the opportunity to talk about all this without you! " - a resident

" This time I didn't hesitate to go and meet the young people downstairs in the building; if I can't find them directly in their homes, at least that way I get to touch them! " - a Smart Neighbor

Thanks to the support of Ramsay Sante Foundation, the program is currently being developed in the town of Aulnay-sous-Bois.
